The Hornstrandir nature reserve is located on the Hornstrandir peninsula, the most north-westerly point of Iceland, the area was abandoned by all its inhabitants during World War II and was officially designated a nature reserve in 1975. Despite its reserve status, most of the land is privately owned and the owners have built summer houses for private use. Hornstrandir's number one inhabitant is the Arctic fox, which roams freely, as the mammals are protected from hunting, and there are organised boat trips to the nature reserve in June, July and August. Those who decide to visit the area should be aware that nature in Hornstrandir is very sensitive. As such, no motorised vehicles, horses, non-native animals or campfires are allowed. It is also compulsory to take all rubbish produced during your trip with you.
