Kerið is a very charming crater, not far from the classic Golden Circle route, a must-see for anyone exploring out of Reykjavík. The 55-metre deep crater is 3,000 years old and is part of the larger Tjarnarhólar area, a collection of crater hills, and as you walk to its rim, you'll notice that Kerið has a lake at its bottom. The story goes that when the water level rises in Kerið, it falls in equal quantity into the small lake on Búrfell mountain in the Grímsnes district, and vice versa. It's like a mystical seesaw! Kerið is a protected natural site. There is a small car park adjacent to the crater, on road 35, and marked trails guide visitors to its rim. Please note that entrance is not free.
