Reykjavík's "The Settlement Exhibition" came about when, in 2001, construction sites in Aðalstræti, in the centre of Reykjavík, uncovered archaeological remains that turned out to be the oldest relics of human construction in Reykjavík. A wall fragment dating from 871 A.D. (about 2 years old) and a 10th century communal hall or house were among the finds.Later, the Settlement Exhibition was conceptualised and built around these structures so that visitors could learn more about the history of the Reykjavík settlement through relics discovered during excavation and through historical texts referring to the first Reykjavík farm. The Reykjavík Settlement Exhibition is open to visitors daily from 09:00 to 20:00. It is located at Aðalstræti 16.
