Iceland's premier concert hall and conference centre, Harpa, opened to the public on 4 May 2011. Designed by Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in collaboration with Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, construction of Harpa began before Iceland's financial collapse in 2008 and was halted at the time of the collapse when the builders went bankrupt, and the Icelandic government then decided to fund the rest of the construction. The resulting structure is a steel frame clad with coloured glass panels in geometric shapes, equipped with exterior lights that mimic the glow of the Northern Lights.Harpa houses the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and the Icelandic Opera, as well as a café, a restaurant and the Icelandic design shop Epal. The building is open for tours every day.
