It is actually a series of rapids caused by the water of the Hvitá river finding a narrow passage.Barnafoss means "Child Falls" and legend has it that one day two children stayed at home while their parents went to church, but got bored and decided to go out to look for them. Taking a shortcut, the two children tried to cross the falls on a natural stone bridge, but fell and drowned. The children's mother cursed the bridge and soon after it was destroyed by an earthquake.
