This small town, situated at the mouth of the Berufjörður Fjord, dates back to the 16th century when the Danes established a trading post there, in fact, a shop from the period, Langabúð, can still be found in the town and many of the older houses (1788-1818) have been restored to their original style. The scenic beauty of the surroundings makes Djúpivogur a popular tourist spot and boat trips to Papey Island are one of its highlights.Djúpivogur is also home to one of Iceland's most original attractions: the Merry Bay Eggs (Eggin í Gleðivík), 34 granite eggs representing several species of local birds. Each large egg, created by local artist Sigurður Guðmundsson, stands on its own pedestal in the town's harbour.
