Hellnar is a fishing village located on a spectacular coastline of beautiful cliffs rising directly from the ocean. There are also some unique rock formations in the area. The Baðstofa cave is particularly famous for the curious light inside. Hellnar is the birthplace of Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir, the wife of Þorfinnur Karlsefni, a legendary Icelandic explorer. The couple settled in Newfoundland in 1004 and Guðríður gave birth to the first European child born on the American continent. Guðríður was one of the best travellers of medieval times, notably trekking to Rome, among other things, and eventually settling in Glaumbær in Skagafjörður.west of the Hellnar intersection, there is a hill called Laugarhöfuð which has a thermal pool at its summit (Bárðarlaug).
