The natural stone labyrinth of Dimmuborgir is located east of Lake Mývatn. It is composed of several rock formations and caves, the best known of which is probably Kirkjan, the "Church".Dimmuborgir is a magnificent lava landscape with extraordinary formations, columns, caves and arches created by the flow of a lava lake over a marshy area some 2300 years ago. As the hot lava flowed over the swamp, the ground water began to boil and the rising vapours created the various lava pillars in the area. The extensive field has several marked trails to explore, some lasting as little as 30 minutes and others up to several hours.Dimmuborgir, which means 'dark city', is considered in Icelandic folklore to be an area that connects earth with hell, and is also believed to be the place where Satan landed when he was cast down from the heavens.
