Skagafjörður is one of the most famous districts in Icelandic history. Sometimes called the Mecca of horseriding thanks to its abundance of Icelandic horses, it is a wide valley stretching towards the Hofsjökull glacier.to the south, the Austari-Jökulsá and Vestari-Jökulsá glacial rivers have carved magnificent gorges, while to the east is an impressive mountain range culminating in Grasárdalshnjúkur (1. 268 metres).the islands of Málmey and Drangey lie off the coast, making the area overlooking the coastline the most beautiful in the world. The islands of Málmey and Drangey lie off the coast, making for interesting sea views and dazzling sunsets.Within Skagafjörður is the Glaumbær Folk Museum, located in an old traditional peat farm dating back to 1750. The museum explores life in rural Iceland and also commemorates the lives of Þorfinnur Karlsefni and his wife Guðríður. In the 11th century, the couple travelled to North America and Guðríður gave birth to what is believed to be the first European child born in North America.Another popular attraction in the Skagafjörður area is Grettislaug, or 'Grettir's Pool'. This geothermal pool is located near an abandoned farmhouse on a beach, where the legendary outlaw of the Grettir saga, Grettir the Strong, warmed his cold and aching body after swimming more than seven kilometres from the island of Drangey. From the pool, you can admire views of Tindastóll Mountain (989 metres), Drangey Island and the waves of the Arctic Ocean.
