Not far from the geothermal areas of Krýsuvík and Seltún lies Kleifarvatn, the third largest lake in southern Iceland. With its surreal volcanic surroundings, this lake contains many trout as well as another creature that is said to inhabit these waters: a whale-sized worm-like monster, Kleifarvatn is also known to be sensitive to climatic and geological changes and has been used as a natural rain gauge. After an earthquake hit the region in 2000, 20% of the lake's surface level disappeared, but by 2008 the original level was almost restored.
