Stykkishólmsbær

Stykkishólmsbær

It is often called "the capital of Snaefellsnes". Historically it has been and still is a fishing and trading centre, with an excellent natural harbour.
It is often referred to as "the capital of Snaefellsnes". Stykkishólmur is famous for its traditional houses, the oldest of which, Norska Húsið (the "Norwegian House") was built with materials imported from Norway by Árni Thorlacius in 1832 when Árni inherited the commercial rights to the town from his father. In addition to his contribution to the establishment of Stykkishólmur, Árni pioneered meteorological observations in the town, starting in 1845. Today Norska Húsið is a folk museum, with a room dedicated to Árni and his wife Anna. Many of the town's other colourful old buildings have been carefully renovated and now house restaurants, hotels and museums. There are almost 2700 small islands in the bay north of Stykkishólmur and cruises allow visitors to see the unusual rock formations and enjoy bird watching, whale watching and spectacular tidal changes.
