Borgarfjörður is a valley about 10 km long, very fertile and green. A very popular area for hikers. The area is also known for its beautiful stones, pebbles and minerals. On the outskirts of Bakkagerði, there is a large hill called Álfaborg, which is perfect if you fancy a nature walk... and if you believe in elves, as the name of the hill translates as "city of elves". At Hafnarhólmi, the ecological harbour, there is an excellent bird watching platform where you can see puffins and gulls. There is a good variety of signposted hiking trails that will take you between the mountains and fjords of the area.in Álfasteinn you will find the information centre, where you can seek advice for hiking in the area. Here you will also find a church with an altarpiece painted by Jóhannes S. Kjarval (1885-1972), considered one of Iceland's most important painters, who grew up in Borgarfjörður.
