Húsafell is a small town surrounded by glaciers, countless hiking options and miles of lava fields. You can visit a couple of waterfalls, see some lava caves near Reykholt or explore the ice cave "Into the Glacier". A must-see natural attraction in the area is the beautiful Hraunfossar waterfall. It is made up of a fascinating series of waterfalls that seemingly rise from the mountain itself, with no river or lake. In reality, the water flows underground, through streams in the lava field of Hallmundarhraun. Another waterfall next to Hraunfossar is Barnafoss. It is actually a series of rapids caused by the water of the Hvitá river finding a narrow passage.Barnafoss means "Child Falls" and legend has it that one day two children stayed at home while their parents went to church, but got bored and decided to go out to look for them. Taking a shortcut, the two children tried to cross the falls on a natural stone bridge, but fell and drowned. The children's mother cursed the bridge and shortly afterwards it was destroyed by an earthquake. For those looking for a little adventure when visiting Húsafell, Into the Glacier offers excursions to the world's largest man-made ice cave. A super truck picks up visitors near the Husafell Hotel to embark on an adventure that will leave many breathless, traversing the glacier to the base camp. The cave itself is a feat of engineering where we can see the crevasses of the glacier from inside and marvel at the smooth walls of ice. LED lighting embedded in the walls illuminates the ice nicely, and there are benches scattered throughout the tunnel.
