Mývatn is a shallow eutrophic lake located in an area of active volcanism in northern Iceland, not far from the Krafla volcano. The lake and surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich population of waterfowl, especially a variety of ducks. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2,300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic features, including lava pillars and vents. The lake is bathed by the Laxá River, known for its rich brown trout and Atlantic salmon fishery.
