Borgarnes is one of the few coastal towns in Iceland that does not depend on fishing. It is a charming municipality located just off the ring road. As well as having a good traveller information centre, the town also has many activities, from golf to sea fishing, and in the surrounding area you will find hot springs, lakes, rivers and beautiful waterfalls. The area where Borgarnes is located today was mentioned in Egil's Saga and an island west of the town centre, Brákarey Island, is named after Egil's slave, Þorgerður Brák.The Borgarnes Settlement Museum is housed in two of the oldest buildings in the town, Pakkhúsið and Búðarklettur. The Centre offers a fascinating insight into Iceland's history and important contributions to the literary world through two exhibitions: the Settlement exhibition, dedicated to the discovery of the island and the Viking settlers; and the Egil's Saga Exhibition, which tells the centuries-old story of the rebellious (and often vengeful) Egill Skallagrímsson, a multi-faceted Viking: farmer, poet and fighter.
