Iceland's first lighthouse was built in Reykjanes in 1878. By 1905, numerous earthquakes and strong waves had damaged the area so badly that there was a risk of the lighthouse falling into the sea. Therefore, in 1907 a new lighthouse was built on the hill of Bæjarfell and the old one was demolished. The height of the light signal is 69 metres above sea level, but the actual height of the lighthouse is 31 metres. The Reykjanes lighthouse also has a radio beacon with a correction signal and is a popular place to take photos, enjoy a picnic or go for a walk.
