The most powerful waterfall in all of Europe. You'll hear the mighty roar of Dettifoss long before you see it. It's 45 metres high and 100 metres wide, allowing 193 m3 of water to cascade into the Dettifoss gorge every second. The waterfalls got their big box-office break in the 2012 sci-fi film Prometheus. The rushing waters and surrounding rough, rocky terrain provided a convincing alien landscape. The waterfalls are visible from the east and west banks of the Jökulslá River, although the view from the west bank is slightly obstructed by waterfall mist and there are no facilities there. On the east bank there are hiking trails, an information board installed by the national park service and public toilets. Whichever side you access Dettifoss from, be careful of the rocky terrain.
